What‘s the day job?
I am a PR and Marketing Officer
How do you fit in Roller Derby with your home life?
Roller Derby pretty much is my priority to be honest; it’s something that really makes me happy in my life right now so I chase it. It’s budgeted for, it’s factored in to all my other plans, a lot of my time is invested into it. I work around it as much as I can – If I have to miss a session it is usually for a very good reason, be it personal or for work. I’d play every day if I could.
What can I say, I have the type of job / lack of dependants / selfish-enough attitude that lets me hit a good attendance rate!
How long have you been a member of BBD?
Nearly eighteen months – I joined in April 2014, transferring from Croydon Roller Derby. I have skated since July 2012.
How/Why did you choose your Derby name?
Rollo Tomasi is from my all-time favourite movie ‘LA Confidential’…if you haven’t seen it, watch it!
What’s the best thing about being a Dame?
I have most certainly found my derby home at the Dames. I have developed my confidence as a player and as a teammate so much in the last year. On the A Team, our coach and the other players really embrace every skaters’ strengths and abilities. We have all kinds of people and skate styles in the team which, I think, makes us pretty powerful. There is no mould, we just all play our hardest.
It’s a tough sport – have you had any major injuries?
I have been pretty lucky to date. My thumb was dislocated last year and I have had busted ribs. I still have a welt on my butt from falling on someone else’s skate as a rookie! I am constantly, constantly covered in bruises and scratches. It’s all fine until you have to put on a pretty dress!
What’s your position in the Dames?
I am a blocker…That’s it. Total one-trick pony.
Does the company you work for support your involvement in the Dames?
They have no choice!
How do your family feel about your involvement with Derby? do they worry about injury etc?
My dad is just happy I am exercising and have lost some timber (true story).
With #ThisGirlCan BBD have had ‘fresh meat’ days to expand the Dames – how do you feel about this batch of Rookies?
The Rookies I have seen are great! Some of them I didn’t even realise were rookies, they were that good. I currently haven’t had too much of a chance to get to know them all personally as we get segregated in training but would love to hang and skate with them – come and talk to me Rookies! Please!
What is it about Derby that is so addictive?
Being a team – It’s nice to be a part of something right? Oh and winning. You can’t beat a hard-earned victory. And, in Roller Derby, it is always hard-earned!
